Sigmatel Stereo Mix support for Dell

Hey buddies…

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 E1505 Laptop! and as a music composer I wanted to sample some midi into wave audio. So, I needed the “Stereo Mix” / “Record What you head” / “Waveout mix”.

Too bad that Dell’s sigmatel driver does not support this feature! but I found a way to fix this issue. All you need to do is install LG’s drivers for Sigmatel… They’re working like charm here ;)

So here’s the download link.

Once the download is done, unzip that folder and open Setup.exe! just follow the instructions… It will ask you to restart your PC… and BINGO!! Solved :D

[...] The sound card on my Dell D620 does not (by default) record the stereo mix.  This is a problem if you want to record the microphone AND a Skype conversation at the same time without having to purchase additional software like HotRecorder.  That was until I can across this post: Hey buddies…    [...]

I wish my dell has a Line In input…

  • http://www.bezahlt.org John

Actually, there isn’t a line-in on my laptop. It’s the same port as the mic, however, the driver can adjust the pre-amp for either input method.

  • http://www.eKhoury.com admin

ohh… that’s pretty cool! It seems that I have that too… Does it work with you with the new driver???

I’m gonna test it right now!

  • http://www.bezahlt.org John

It did not seem to work with the new driver, however, I haven’t tested it yet.

  • http://www.eKhoury.com admin

i have tested it! and it worked… there’s no line in in the recording mixer… but when u select the Microphone it works as line in… I recorded my guitar directly from the amp output… and the quality is pretty good!

Looks like you guys have solved a major issue with the standard sigmatel drivers installed on a Dell (in this case an Dimension 5150 duo). There are lots of people out there with mic/line issues and Dell computers.
You can also install intel AC97 drivers on some models:
    —————
Go to Start/Control Panel/System/ Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager. Go down to Sound, Video, and Game controllers and right click on SigmaTel. Choose properties.
Go to the Driver tab and click on Update Driver.
Answer “No” to the Windows Update question.
Choose “Install From List or specific location”.
Hit next and then choose “Don’t Search, I will choose driver I want to install”.
You will get a list of Sigmatel drivers. Uncheck the box that says “show compatible hardware”.
Select Intel, and then select “Intel AC 97 Audio Controller”. XP replaces the SigmaTel driver with the Intel AC97.
To reinstall the SigmaTel just select “Rollback Driver”.
    ———————

I haven’t tried installing this yet as I’m gathering enough info first.

Thanks for the tip on LG

ok…i have a dell xps 400 pc. not a laptop…what should i do to get the stereo mix option on here?

  • http://www.eKhoury.com fusion

Use the same driver… I guess all dells have the same sigmat tel ship…

  • Victor

    There are 2 drivers.
The first one: Ver 5.10.0.5031 has size 95MB.
The second one Ver 5.10.0.4866 has size 5 MB.
    Which one should I download?

  • http://www.eKhoury.com fusion

I downloaded the 95 MB one!

    didn’t try the other one…
Let us know if the 5 MB works with you!

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron E1505 with the Sigmatel sound card and could not get it to record streaming audio due to the missing Stereo Mix control. Calling Dell was a big waste of time especially when I spent more time trying to figure out what the heck the guy from India was saying. This is my last Dell laptop forever.

The driver recommended in this forum (v. 5.10.0.5031) worked and I am now able to record streaming audio with my audio recorder sotware.

Big thanks to whoever found the fix!

  • coves

i just found this forum and it seems to be exaclty what i was looking for, but the link provided doesn’t work.
is there anywhere else i can get this driver?

  • morf

    @ coves,
link works just fine here once you enable Javascript

    @ fusion,
thanks very much for the tip on the LG driver, I am trying it right now.

Also can anyone recommend a free program which I can use to record stereo sounds for a project? i.e. something other than Windows sound recorder.

  • syrrek

I’m just trying to get a mic working on my Dell E510 with the Sigma Tel audio. I’ve tried two different mic’s (none USB) with no success. Do you think the driver update above may be a solution to my issue?

  • slayer

    morf,

IMHO the best free sound editor out there is Audacity. http://audacity.sourceforge.net
I’m using the latest beta version and it’s working beautifully for me.

    fusion,
The LG driver works great, thanks for the tip.

    FYI
On Dells support board, the official response is that the functionality is missing because of hardware limitations and therefore is working as designed.

My guess is that as the worlds largest mfr. of pc’s, they’re getting a kickback from the RIAA for leaving the functionality out of their driver.

  • http://www.eKhoury.com fusion

yea Audacity is not bad at all…

  • CIF

Thanks for a great heads-up on the LG driver tip. Worked a treat and resolves a big headache I’ve been having with my Inspiron 6400.

So I installed the driver, selected microphone as the input source but it still won’t detect the sound coming from my guitar.. any suggestions?

  • kef300

“admin” if you see this, please let me know how you fixed your problem, I wanna record my guitar too, I’ve done that with my previous computer but it’s not working with my Inspiron E1505.. I did download the drivers, but it still won’t detect the sound.. please reply hear or email me at jofesanpa@hotmail.com

  • http://www.eKhoury.com fusion

kef300, I just plugged my amplifier’s output to the Mic input! and selected the Mic in the Recording Control…

It should work as line in!

  • kef300

Thanks for the quick reply, I actually managed to get it to work but the signal comes out choppy, don’t know how to fix it, this is really frustrating

  • kef300

One other things (sorry for the double post), the input appears to only come in on the left channel, and hence, only comes out of the left speaker..

  • http://www.eKhoury.com fusion

    The guitar is mono dude!

If it’s just for home recording, u can just plug the guitar to a small mixer and plug the stereo output to the laptop… or you can record the mono channel and make it stereo using a software…

  • http://- nerfie

    hi,

i just bought a Dell E1505 last week and if I would have know the problem with SigmaTel audio card and audacity, I just wouldn’t have bought this laptop. anyways, when i first installed audacity i had only “Microphone and Line In” in my audacity recording options. after searching a whole lot, i somehow luckily managed to land on this wonderful piece of information. when i installed the LG drivers (as suggested above) the options changed to “Microphone, CD Audio & Stereo Mix”.

My problem is that I can’t get audacity to record even after using the “stereo mix” option. I made sure i have selected the “SigmaTel Audio” under the Edit > Preferences > Recording tab.

am i missing something here? i really want to get audacity recording what i hear. any help will be greatly appreciated.

    thanks in advance,
    N

  • jp

ok, this works, i got a stereo out option with the 95 mb file, but i use a mic, and its only recording the left side, i mean i can only hear the left side of the mic

  • john doe

I downloaded the driver and i thought my issue was fixed.

-I need to record conferences through skype (with video)
-The stereo mix causes my reciepient on the other end to hear what they are saying (echo)
-this is because the stereo mix causes my skype to change its capture device to stereo mix as well.

Anyone know how to solve this?

I’ve been having the same problem with my newly purchased gateway, so i downloaded the driver that you put up knowing that it was for a dell notebook and now sigmatel is gone from my volume controls altogether, if anyone can help please email me nevatripalone @ yahoo.com

Fusion…I tried all the steps (twice) to get update sugnatel to get sterior mix on Audacity’s. Did it twice and had to restore my PC because after I did it, my music would not play. I just bought a Dell E510 desktop. When I downloaded Audacity, it only gave me 3 options to record…not 5 or 6 as I had on my Gateway. Do you have any other suggestions? Please help. I need to record music and I have use my Gatewey to do it and then put the music on a CD and download it on to my Dell. It is so aggrivating. HELP, please!

    Hi
I have a Dell laptop and installed the LG the drivers for the sigmatel sound card. However I have lost line in on the recoding menu, I get stereo mix, cd audio and microphone. Recording from the steroe amp into the mic socket on the laptop only records in mono through the left channel. Am I missing something?

i have normal desktop for intel does this lg audio software will work wid it ?

  • Yaniv

I found this website while searching for a way to enable microphone playthrough on my Dell 600m. I needed to be able to speak into the microphone that is connected to the microphone jack, and have it immediately output to the speakes conencted to the headphone jack.
The problem was that my default SigmaTel audio drivers disabled access to un-mute the microphone in the playback mixer.
I followed Peter’s advice on choosing the Intel integrated audio drivers (comment #7 above), and it worked great! Now I have all the extended options for both playback and recording devices to enable/disable, and mute/unmute. The only drawback seems to be that the “master volume” control sometimes doens’t adjust the wav volume like it should.

    Hi everybody,

    hi.
a friend just got a dell E520 with sigmatel sound driver (desktop not laptop).
and theres realy low volume in playing music ect.but mic is clear as a bell.

anyone know what she can do to fix this please.

  • http://hannelore10.blogspot.com/ Hanne

    Hi!

Yes, it works. Great. Now I have the Stereo Mix recording-option.

    I use the driver-version 5.10.4143

When you install the file and every time you start the computer you probably receive a message: “This version of Intel Audio Studio does not support the board detected.”

Disable autostart of the program in msconfig.

Now there are 4 new Intel-drivers for Sigmatel. I don’t know what the difference is.

  • http://hannelore10.blogspot.com/ Hanne

    Hi again!

    5.10.5143 is my driver-version.

  • Antony

Thanks for the excellent link Hanne.

I have a Dell Dimension desktop 5150 with the 3 device SigmaTel Audio. After downloading the

5.10.5208_XP32_XP64_MCE_2K_AC97FP_STACGUI.EXE: – Audio driver with support for legacy AC’97 front panel header plus the Sigmatel* software interface.

I get the Stereo Mix option which works fine.

  • Burnie

I have tried the sigmatel driver that adds the Stereo Mix in the source list.

It works fine now I can record but there is a little annoying thing. Every 20 seconds or so it adds a little glitch in the music. That little thing is enough for me to remove the driver and wait for an update :( .

Anyone else experiencing that small glitch?

    Thx,

    Burnie

  • http://hannelore10.blogspot.com/ Hanne

    Hi Burnie!

Do you use a trial-version of Total Recorder?

    Try to record with Audacity.

  • http://www.outallnite.co.uk robbie

the reason why it doesnt work is cause the sigmatel chip is crap and has a dodgy audio rate or something which means when u record what u hear you get crackling etc

i’ve got a dimension e520 and its a different driver but i want to do the same record what i hear

  • Geep

Robbie I can only half agree : For about $1 a piece built in preamps and power amps it’s a mavel. We are used to Audigy 2′s and better which don’t suffer from drift as they don’t mix and re-record in the digital domain. I believe that the stream to be recorded isn’t clocked by the Sigmatel chip but the actual recording process is as it is the record sync master : Thus we get a re-sync glitch periodically. Rather like strobing a turntable there is never a true phase lock. Sincerely, Geep

  • HGM

I have tried the sigmatel driver that adds the Stereo Mix in the source list. Thanks for this LG driver tip. This has resolved a big headache I’ve been having with my Inspiron 6400.

It works fine now I can record but there is a little annoying thing. After I have updated the Driver the Sound volume has gone down appreciably, may be its a subwoofer problem.

Is there anyway I can fix it? if anyone can help please email me h_mukhopadhyay@hotmail.com. Thanx.

  • Thankful

THANK YOU SO MUCH, Hanne, my Dell XPS sound works so much better now with the updated driver (and with stereo mix). Its too bad the darn DELL WEBSITE doesn’t link to the most up-to-date drivers for its intel chipset :(

  • Thankful

    Thank you!

  • Geep

HGM, that is the case. The sub is disabled because LG doesn’t use one. You can find a driver pack that includes the newest Dell driver with some additional support hacked in from other driver packs. Go here http://www.notebookforums.com/thread169312-14.html and look at posts 206 and 207. Sincerely, Geep

  • Sid

The LG driver worked like a charm. Thank you so much for posting this fix.

  • Geep

Robbie the implementation of the “piece of crap” STAC 9200 chip is probably more at fault for crappy performance. Sigmatel specs say 24 bit up to 192 khz with input S/N of -90 db yet best case in a Dell laptop is about -60db….eeh pretty crappy.

  • shyam

    Hi all.
I just stepped into the same problems as everybody, no stereo-mix, no what u hear, no CD, no wave as recording sources.

I’ve got a Dell Dimension E520, my integrated Sigmatel soundcard is the STAC9227, and the codec i have is the 5.10.0.4991.
Did anybody manage to solve this problem with a same or similar configuration as mine?
Hanne, you said she used the 5.1.5143 and it worked, but where did you find it? on the links you gave i couldn’t find it. Have you got a desktop or a notebook?

I have an Inspiron 9400 and the modded driver from the notebookforums thread posted by Geep was perfectly helpful. Now I have Stereo Mix ! ! Thanks man ! ! Only one small question..is there any way by which I can keep the recording controls from reverting to line-in as the default recording line…each time i restart my system the recording controls automatically selects line-in while I want to permanently select stereo-mix. Anyway to set stereo-mix as default..maybe a registry hack..??

    Thanks…:)

    Hi!
About 8 mo. ago I bought a Dell Notebook – Inspiron E1705. My boyfriend is a dj and records via the line-in all the time. Recently we got XM radio and bought a program called Replay A/V which works awesome to record XM online, or any other streaming radio. You can program, etc. When we tried to set a recording, the only two options with our card was Line-in and Microphone. Luckily I stumbled across this forum last night and downloaded the 95mb LG driver. Works like a charm..except for one BIG problem. My boyfriend noticed that now the only recording options are Stereo Mix, CD audio, and Microphone. The line-in is gone!! And he tried to record to no avail. I could really use some advice as to what to do. The only recording options I really care about are the Line-in, and the Stereo-Mix (or anything that will allow me to record online radio) Please e-mail me or post back with any help..I really need to get this fixed asap!!!!
    Thanks in advance!!
    e-mail me!

  • Al

    Hi:

I have the same problem as listed above. I’ve got a
Dell Inspiron 1501 for christmas and I noticed no stereo mixer option for recording. I tried installing the LG driver and worked, but the quality of sound was awfuly bad and the subwoofer did not work well. So I installed the old driver and I could realize that the sound was different indeed.

So, my question is… Does it exist a driver that allows to record from Stereo mixer AND that keeps the quality of sound (And the subwoofer) ???

Your answer will be really appreciated. Thanks.

PS: I apologize for my english… I’m writing from Chile. Great forum

    @natalie…
try the driver at the above link..i have it installed on my 1705..works perfect..no distortion..subwoofer works fine and u get line-in and stereo mix in recording controls. Although it may be wise to install the default drivers first…i believe the LG drivers(95 mb) dont work best on the 1705.
    happy recording ! !

I just purchased a new e521 desktop system from Dell, and I’m having the same problems as everyone else – no stereo mix input on the SigmaTel integrated audio card. I tried the LG driver last night, and it didn’t work so I rolled it back to factory driver. I see the suggestion that seems to be working for some on the Intel drivers, but my motherboard is the new AMD Athlon x64 dual core. I’m assuming that Intel driver won’t fix my problem because it’s configured for an Intel motherboard. Is there a similiar fix for us AMD people out there? Any ideas are immensely appreciated!!!!

  • Tha DoN

    Well Better Yet…

Instead of spending painful hours on the internet trying to solve this problem, or, purchasing another sound card, simply carry out the following: -

    1) Go down to your local electronics shop and purchase a jack splitter (two jack inputs into one jack) and a jack to jack lead

    2) Then plug in one end of the jack lead into one socket of the splitter.
Take out the jack that goes to the speakers and plug that into the other socket of the splitter. Now plug this splitter into the “speaker” output of your sound card.

    3) Plug the other end of the jack lead into the “line in” socket or “microphone” socket on your sound card.

SORTED – You now have the ablilty to record “what u hear” (using either “line in” or “microphone” depending on what you pluged the other end of the lead into.

  • Al

Tha DoN: Brilliant…. Just brilliant. Thanks, man!

  • Andy

With the jack splitter to jack cable solution, is the sound quality still good, as in, comparable to the sound I’d get while recording from a new sound card?

  • Tha DoN

Personally i found the sound quality to be great. (just for the record i inputed my jack lead into the “line in” jack plug as this often has constant sound volume, unlike the microphone jack, which i believe often varies).

  • dan.

yeh this has jus fucked up my sound card, sum major error messed it up. great

  • M

At first the 95mb driver changed to stereo mix etc. as nerfie said, but it still wouldn’t record… well after selecting sigmatel audio on the audacity’s preferences, it still wouldn’t record.

Now check volume–options, properties, dropdown to sigmatel audio—- then adjust volume for recording, check all, including stereo mix…
    click ok.

Then you notice the recording volume for stereo mix is at 0. that’s the problem. raise it. Fixed!

    Voila.

Dell is retarded for making everything so difficult.

  • M

Also, I notice the quality problems after installing the 95 mb driver as well. It isn’t “exactly what you hear”, but sounds rather of lower compressed quality.

  • Matt

Hey I have a Gateway Notebook, and as of right now, the link to LG doesn’t work, I have a SigmaTel C-Major sound card, anyone help?

  • Charlie B

I have a Dell Latitude D620, experienced from the very beginning the same Stereo Mix problem as many others. The solution suggested in the original posting, using LG’s driver etc, worked fine for me. Thanks a lot!

  • TCA

    I’ve done a little one-night research, and here are some findings . . . .

I had the same problems as just about everyone else was having concerning the Wave Out Mix/Stereo Mix/”What You Hear”/whatever and the fact that it’s missing from most new Dells. After figuring out WHY there was a problem, it’s safe to say that unless a permanent solution is found, I’ll never be ordering a computer from Dell again.

Anyway, I downloaded the 95MB SigmaTel driver ZIP, unpacked it and installed it on my brand new Dell Dimension E521 desktop (now about two weeks old). Didn’t work, had to roll the driver back.

I transferred the ZIP to my new-ish Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop via flash drive and installed it there. Tested out just fine, as I suspected it would (this being a laptop thread).

As soon as anyone figures out a fix for Dimension on the SigmaTel driver issue, I’d be glad to hear about it. I have this thread bookmarked and I’ll check it periodically. For now, I may have to do my recording via laptop, even though I’d rather not as it doesn’t have nearly as much capacity or space as this handy-dandy Dimension (minor problems such as this notwithstanding, it IS a pretty sweet computer).

  • TCA

The 95MB solution worked on my Inspiron 1501 but not on my Dimension E521.

Have any SOLID solutions for desktop PC’s for this problem? It seems to me that it’s been hit-or-miss so far, including in my case.

  • JimL

Same problem on my new Dimension E520 desktop ….
Tried the “updated” SigmaTel drivers from the Intel & LG sites with no success. Hoping that somebody has found drivers that work with these Dell Desktop PCs! Or I guess I’ll have to buy a “real” soundcard.

  • Steve

Intel driver didn’t work on my Insp 6400
LG small (5M) driver did. It gave me the audio mixer record function.

BTW, I think this feature is a part of the Windows AC97 standard, so I guess Dell machines are non-compliant unless “hacked”.
    Way to go Dell!

Another gripe, and off-topic, but as long as I’m ranting, I’ve never seen so much unwanted fluff preloaded on a computer before. I’m still finding and removing things like AOL, MSN, time-limited demos, Dell Broadband Ads,…
I probably should have just wiped the drive and loaded Windows from scratch.

Quick question guys- I have an Inspiron 6400, and have been having big trouble with my SigmaTel card too. I’m trying to get my sound source to play through the laptop’s speakers, by connecting it to the line-in port (well, the mic port, but same thing on this laptop). Using sound recorder I can confirm that the audio is making its way to the computer just fine (by recording and playing it back), but I can’t get it to playback in realtime on the computer- i need line-in playback volume controls, but the windows mixer isn’t showing this option anywhere. Will the LG drivers (or any others) work?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Mark Cullinane

Actually, the small (5MB) LG drivers did the trick, fantastic! Just needed some tweaking with the microphone options to eliminate the distortion, but it works great. Thanks guys, this page has been a great help. :)

Have a gateway with the sigmatel device. Same problem as everyone. When I try to download from Lg site I get a message that says not “not authorized(your request did not come from an LG site or your request information is empty). Why won’t it let me download.

  • chuck

OK…I bought the cheapest damn dell available. I use audacity all the time, but on my dell inspiron b130, i cant record. I only get a line in and mic source option, I need a stereo source or “what you hear” option. Ive read forums blaming the sigmatel sound card driver, and implying dell disabled the record function purposely (can you spell…KICKBACK?) at the request of the RIAA. Pure evil!
Anyway, whats the fix? Is there a proven driver that will work anywhere?. I tried the Ver 5.10.0.5031 driver update form the LG website. That gave me the desired input choices, but the audio had a terrible echo sound upon replay. Any help appreciated

i have a dell 600 and i want a usb-microphone to direct output on the speakers. i tried the lg-driver, but it doesnt work. i edited the registry and now i have a output-volume control for my built-in mic-in, but there is still no mixer for the usb-mic. does anyone now how to get a mixer enabled for this??

  • P

Same problem on my Inspiron 9400, but after installing the alternative Sigmatel codec, I get the option stereomix. Than you!

  • Jav

I followed your instruction and installed it on Dell Dimension E520 Desktop but didn’t work.

I had some trouble with the methods posted here… Specifically that the headphone port on the dock wouldn’t cut the internal speakers on the laptop on my Latitude D620.

Using the information and files obtained over at the NotebookForum.com site, I took a look at the INI files, and decided to try my own hack. It seems to work, and has the added benefit of exposing the entire SigmaTel control panel.

No warranties on this one, but you can snag the files at my site:

I also have a Gateway and can’t record anything but what comes in Via my mic. I’m still looking for a fix. Any suggestions? :-) Thank you.

  • Micha

I have a dell Dimension 9200, bought in dec 2006 (desk top). SigmaTel stac 9200. I followed every driver link that has been posted here – installation failed. Also tried some posted hacks for the sigmatel drivers, but no one works – no stereo mix available. If someone has a solution in the meanwhile, I would be glad to here of.

  • Lijnis

I also tried the drivers on a Dimension 521: no success.
A workaround is to “shortcut” your line-in with your speaker-out.
This works, but you can’t hear anything during record…

  • Brad

Anyone know where to get Vista compatible drivers for this?

  • Thinline

I’ve posted a Gateway fix for “Stereo Mix” here (Post #3).

The large LG Sigmatel driver (95MB) on a Dell Inspiron 1501 and it worked well.

    Thank you for the suggestion!

  • Robin

I have followed the very helpful advice in the thread and manged to get stereo mix available. However, when I try to record (audacity) I get a terrible echo, both in listening and playback.

    Latitude 420

    Grateful for any suggestions

  • Mike

I downloaded it and installed, It just removes sound, even after restarting, No help at all, Using Vista. Is there ANY help? Stereo Mix/What You Hear/Wave Out IS a must for me.

  • JD

I’ve got a Dell Inspiron B130 and I’ve just installed SONAR 5 but even after running audio scans, I get a message to say that my Sigmatel driver does not support SONAR 5 audio format. Does anyone have a recommendation? By the way, I’m running an XP 64 platform.

  • KJ

I used to have an old desktop Dell at work that would let me record streaming audio, but this new laptop didn’t work the same way. Frustrating. I used the link provided by Todd, downloaded his INI hack, followed the instructions, and it worked great! It unlocked the SigmaTel audio control panel; I now have Stereo Mix, Line In, External Mic, and Internal Mic, and so far I recorded a couple of test streaming clips that sound like they should. Probably it helped that the hack was created it for the same laptop I’m using…Dell Latitude D620. I thought about downloading the LG driver and all the other suggestions, but used his link instead.

  • Misera

Does anyone still have any of the files? I can’t seem to download any of them…

  • HariOM

I think it will be useful if folks who were able to get the stereo mix option working to give details of their SigmaTel audio card and the driver they used so that others can use the appropriate solution. It is really a waste of time if the 94 MB download does not work (not everyone has high speed connection). These are my details:

    1) Vendor ID: 8384
    2) Device ID: 7680
    3) Computer: Dell Dimension 9100
    4) OS: XP Pro SP2
    5) Driver that worked: 5.10.5208_XP32_XP64_MCE_2K_STACGUI.EXE from:
    http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=2068&DwnldID=8658
    6) Driver that did not work: 94 MB driver from LG

The Vendor ID and Device ID were obtained from:
Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Sounds, video and game controllers

Right click on SigmaTel, select Properties and click on Details tab.

By the way how does one determine the SigmaTel chip number, i.e. is mine a 9200, 9220 or something else?

    Thanks.

Hey I could not find the file on their site, could someone put it in a .zip archive and mail it to me at stevesjukebox@gmail.com

  • Luiz

The 5mb one worked fine! Just give it a try!!
    Thanks for the tip!

  • Ivy

hey, thanks for the link, but it didn’t work. I downloaded the driver from intel (http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=2068&DwnldID=8658) and now my sound devices wont work. I uninstalled the driver and tried to re-install it to get my sound back and now it wond re-download. Is there anyone who can help me with this? I have a Dell Desktop with a SigmaTel sound card (don’t know any other specs), and I’m wondering if there’s another driver that can help me get my sound back.

  • Saxman

Reply to Ivy: Maybe you know about this things already but otherwise:

You may be able to roll your system back to an earlier Restore Point (I don’t know about Vista, but in XP you can search for “Restore Point” under “Help and Support” on the Start Menu). To go ahead with a System Restore, you actually need to run the Help: type “Restore Wizard”, and then click “Run the System Restore Wizard”.

Hopefully someone else has a better solution if this fails (reformatting your harddisk, and reinstalling Windows is not a nice option, but otherwise this is all I can think of).

  • Saxman

I went for the 5MB version for my Dell Inspiron 640m (known as E1405 in the US) under Windows XP Pro, and got the Stereo Mix without any drop in sound quality that I can notice (I consider myself fairly fussy, though my headphones are only mid-range quality).

The only problem is that the Line In port makes LOTS of background noise – so much that I cannot use the port for anything but uptempo, ‘loud’, music. Do any of you other guys have the same problem (with or without installing the one of the SigmaTel drivers)? I imagine this is a hardware issue, but just in case: If any of you read this before updating the driver, maybe you can make a test by recording something with the Line In port before and after? I don’t want to tempt fate and uninstall the thing now when it at least works great for recording lastfm.com (streaming “customizable” radio with pretty amazing quality – higher than all DAB stations in the UK), after setting the Line In port to Mute to turn off the background noise.

Also, has anyone with a Line In port noise problem managed to solve this by using an external sound card? Any recommended brands/models?

Providing the Line In noise is the same across the board, maybe more people should try the 5MB driver first (?) – the only experiences reported here about sound quality getting worse seem to be from guys who went for the 95MB version.

For a complete picture: I downloaded all other available sound drivers for the 640m from Dell site (and no Stereo Mix turned up) before I tried the 5MB LG driver.

    SigmaTel details
    Vendor ID: 8384
Device ID: 7690 (NB: different from users above, who reported 7680)

Computer: Dell Inspiron 640M, Core 2 Duo T5500
    Operating System: XP Pro SP2

  • Justin

Ok so I installed the driver, edited the sound options and can now record using audacity; the only thing is, everything I record is barely audible. I can really only hear the recorded audio when I turn the volume up to max. Anyone know how to fix this?

  • hlw

You all are so awesome! I spent forever on the phone with Dell trying to fix this to no avail. I just happened to come upon this blog. I have an E1705 and downloaded the 95 kb sigmatel driver. Now I can record through stereo mix. Thank you so much!

I have the same Sigma Tel problem and the program you recommend, DriverBooster, says the driver’s up to date and shouldn’t be replaced. What are the “LG” drivers you recommend, where can they be downloaded, and how do you install them?

I did it and rebooted. not only didn’t it work but also now my stereo doesn’t work.
    WOW, dearly thank you.

Took a while to find you but it was worth the searching. This LG driver fixed the problem. You are a genius………….. Thanks

THIS WORKS WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS

    Sigmatel enable Stereo Mix

click on start, run, type regedit

    go to the following path:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControl
    ControlClass{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}017Settingsfilterrear]

Note: the path 0017 is for M1210 diffrent dell PC or Laptop may in diffrent path. Choose from 0000 to 00xx….or find the path filterrear

In rear add two new binary value as follow 1 & 2, and modify the value of 3 & 4:

    1 DigitalInputMonitor = hex:01 (Add Binary Value)
    2 DigitalStereoMix = hex:01 (Add Binary Value)

    3 MasterControlsIndependentMixerInputs = hex:00 (Change 01 to 00)
    4 EnableInputMonitor = hex:01 (Change 00 to 01)

Then Restart Your Computer….Stereo Mix is now enable….

You Can Now Record Streaming Audio from Internet! & Audacity is now supported!

Please Download & install the Latest Driver from Dell before you do this, & don’t install SB Advance MB. for some computers, they may have bad sound come out when playing CD or DVD after modified the regedit, there are two ways to solve 1. format your PC & install a clean windows XP, don’t use dell restore. 2. change your regedit back to original when you want to play CD or DVD.
